North Belfast Blaze Suspicious

As many as 40 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were last night involved in dealing with a fire in two derelict shops that was in danger of spreading to a chemist's shop. The blaze, on the Crumlin Road in north Belfast, was reported shortly after 3.15pm on Thursday. "The severity of the fire so early in the day would lead us to believe the origins were suspicious," said fire officer Chris Kerr. "That's what we're working on and we're co-operating with police regarding the examination of the scene."

Man Shot In Legs

A man has been treated in hospital following what police have described as a paramilitary-style attack in west Belfast. The 29-year-old was admitted with gun shot wounds to both legs. It is believed he was attacked in the Norglen Crescent area at about 9.15pm on Thursday. Detectives at Antrim Road PSNI Station have appealed to anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.

School Blaze Slammed

An Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn has hit out at those involved in an arson attack on St Colm's High School in the Twinbrook area. "What sort of person sets out to burn down a school?" he said. A PSNI spokesman said there had been an incident of arson at a school in the Summer Hill Drive area some time between 6pm on Wednesday and 1.20am yesterday. Entry was gained and a window was smashed and chair set alight, causing minor damage.

Fermanagh PSNI Face Reduction

Proposals to reduce the number of police stations in County Fermanagh are being put out for public consultation. The number of stations in the county was cut from 13 to seven in 2005, but it was decided to keep Irvinestown and Newtownbutler open at that time. However, Newtownbutler has again been put forward for potential closure - along with Belcoo, Belleek and Kesh. If the proposals are passed, it would mean stations would remain in Enniskillen, Lisnaskea and Irvinestown.

Rates Cut

There are hopes that Northern Ireland's declining property market will get a boost from the UK interest rate cut yesterday. The base rate was slashed to 5% from 5.25% by the Bank of England in an attempt to spur the economy in the face of the global credit crunch. The Bank said that disruption in financial markets and tighter credit conditions could lead to a slowdown in the wider economy. Business groups welcomed the decision and called for further cuts to shore up growth.
