Robinson Nominated For Top DUP Post
The 'one horse race' is over with news that the largest political party in Northern Ireland has chosen its new leader - Peter Robinson.
Outgoing DUP boss, 'the Doc' Ian Paisley wanted to appoint his successor by early next month and has pushed the process forward by arranging a meeting of the party's Assembly group for this morning, at which the DUP Deputy Leader, Peter Robinson was nominated as his successor.
The DUP's Assembly Party wasn't actually due to meet until May 12 to nominate the long serving 'Doc's' successor, but the outgoing First Minister decided last week to bring it forward to today.
After the Party's 35 Assembly members and Rev Paisley gathered at Stormont this morning for the meeting, the 120-strong DUP Executive will then meet in May to ratify the new leader and his deputy who was also confirmed today to be Nigel Dodds the North Belfast MP.
A conscequence of today's result is that Peter Robinson will automatically become the NI Executive's First Minister when Ian Paisley retires.
