Desmonds closure sees job cuts in Dungannon
Over 100 jobs are to be lost in Dungannon after clothing manufacturer Desmonds and Sons announced its intention to close its manufacturing facility in the town.
Speaking yesterday, a spokesperson for the firm said that the decision to close the manufacturing unit was not taken lightly, and in no way reflected upon the efforts of their workforce. However, the spokesperson said that economic pressures and recruitment problems meant that the facility was no longer viable.
The closure of the Dungannon facility – which has provided employment for the area for over 10 years – represents a real blow for the area. SDLP assembly member for Fermanagh/South Down, Tommy Gallagher, described the news as "a tragedy" for Dungannon, and "very discouraging news" for the area.
He added: "This is another area west of the Bann suffering because of the already well-documented problems in the textile industry. I will be taking this matter up with the Employment Minister at the first opportunity."
Desmonds and Sons currently employs over 2,000 people at 10 production units in Northern Ireland.
