Bloody Sunday tribunal resumes after summer break

The Saville Inquiry into the deaths of 13 civilians, shot dead by soldiers during a civil rights march in Londonderry on January 30, 1972, has resumed after a summer recess.

The tribunal is currently sitting in the city's Guildhall before moving to London to hear evidence from soldiers present on the day of the incident.

However, it was rumoured today that a second member of the Provisional IRA at the time is to give evidence to the 'Bloody Sunday' tribunal.

Only last week the inquiry appealed for members of the PIRA to come forward to give evidence. This followed a call from Lord Saville in June for PIRA members to come forward and give evidence into what happened 20 years ago.

As the tribunal rose for the summer break, Lord Saville said that four years into the inquiry, only a small number of IRA members had come forward.

Education Minister, Martin McGuinness, who admitted to being a member of the PIRA at the time, was among the first to come forward and make contact with the inquiry.

Six former members of the Official IRA have already provided statements about what they were doing on the day.
