Review of Public Administration team hosts ‘Listening’ exercise
The Review of Public Administration team is planning to run a series of meetings across Northern Ireland throughout September and October.
The meetings are intended as ‘listening exercise’ and will be held with groups and organisations that have a key interest in the review.
Commenting on the meetings, the review team’s chief operating officer, Greg McConnell said: “In undertaking to review the current system of public administration in Northern Ireland, the Executive has set itself a challenging task.
“The scale of this review is vast, it has a remit which includes the 26 district councils, four health boards, five education boards, government agencies and numerous other public bodies.
“Before we start our formal public consultation process we believe it is vital to engage with those organisations who make up the public sector to gauge their views. The issues which arise from these meetings will help inform our thinking and enable us to draft a consultation paper which we will then take out to the general public.”
The review team will be accompanied at the meeting's by individual members of the panel of independent expert who were appointed in June. They include: Chairman, Tom Frawley, James B King, Sir Neil McIntosh, Desmond Mitchell, Anne O’Keeffe and Lucy Woods.
Chairman, Tom Frawley, said: “The Review of Public Administration represents a major challenge for the Executive but it also provides a huge opportunity to modernise the entire structure of public administration in Northern Ireland.
“As independent experts we believe the wide range of experience and expertise we can bring to the review will be of great value to the process."
The Review of Public Administration was formally launched in the Assembly in June.
It is expected that the review team will produce an interim report by the spring of 2003, followed by a final report by the end of the same year.
