NI Executive Reveals Oil Supply Contingency Plan
The Northern Ireland Executive has put in place contingency plans to mitigate possible fuel supply disruption as a result of a planned strike at Grangemouth oil refinery.
A two-day strike by up to 1,200 workers will now go ahead on Sunday and Monday, after talks between the refinery bosses, Ineos and the union, Unite broke down.
A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment said the refinery is not a major fuel supplier to NI, but the department has contingency plans to cover a range of eventualities.
"Planning to mitigate the effect of possible future fuel supply disruptions is a prudent course of action for any responsible government," the spokesperson said.
"Northern Ireland receives supplies of oil from a variety of sources from within the UK and abroad including Rotterdam.
"DETI is liaising closely with officials in the Civil Contingency Secretariat, the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), the Scottish Executive and local oil companies on developments."
The Petrol Retailers' Association also said it has enough reserve supplies.
