North West Jobs Boost On Way
There's good news for the North West with an announcement that several hundred new jobs are to be created in Londonderry.
An Indian-based telecommunications company, Firstsource, which already employs 500 people in their offices on the Northland Road, has revealed plans for a significant expansion of its operations.
The company has reversed the trend for outsourcing UK call handling to the Indian subcontinent by instead providing a call centre and back office processing services to the financial services, telecom and media, travel and healthcare sectors in Northern Ireland.
Earlier this year, NI Economy Minister Nigel Dodds recognised the commitment of such Indian companies in Northern Ireland, as he was setting off on trade and investment mission.
The Minister said: "Firstsource is well on its way to creating over 1,000 jobs at its Belfast and Londonderry centres.
"Investments made by international companies such as Firstsource are playing an important role in introducing new business skills to the Northern Ireland economy."
The Minister visited New Delhi and Mumbai in India in February for talks with business and political leaders and tourism operators, which may - in part - have helped lead to the new job creation in Londonderry.
