NI News In Brief
Life Of Brian
Ireland is about to have a new leader as Brian Cowen is to be elected as Taioseach this afternoon, replacing Bertie Ahern. The County Offaly solicitor will be nominated in the Dail to the Office of the Taoiseach and will then visit the Irish President at Aras an Uachtarain to receive his seal of office before announcing his new Cabinet. He was last night unanimously elected as president of Fianna Fail at a special meeting of senior party members.
Donaghadee Petrol Bombing
Petrol bombs have been thrown at changing rooms in playing fields in County Down. The incident happened at Moat Street in Donaghadee just before 9pm on Tuesday night. A PSNI spokesman said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Vote For Victims' Law
The Assembly has voted in favour of giving the First and Deputy First Ministers the option to appoint a Chief Victims' Commissioner in the future. The compromise, backed by the DUP and Sinn Fein, followed a series of delays to the Victims' Bill required to give the new commission legal authority. The bill has been withdrawn at the last moment on two previous occasions. The DUP and Sinn Fein disagreed over an Alliance idea for a chief commissioner to lead the four-strong body.
Flight Costs Soar
Aer Lingus has become the latest airline to announce a hike in prices. The Irish carrier - which recently 'landed' in Belfast - has increased luggage check in charges. Online bag check-in will now cost £8, while checking in at the airport will cost £12. The airline says the increase is to encourage more passengers to carry hand luggage and so save on expensive fuel, by reducing overall weight.
