Bertie Bows Out With Orange And Green
While he was with a party of Orangemen earlier this week, outgoing Taoiseach Bertie Ahern yesterday went over to 'the other side' when he performed his last official duties as head of government - this time at a ceremony in Dublin to remember those who died in the 1916 Rising.
Mr Ahern took the salute of a guard of honour made up of 108 members of the Defence Forces on his arrival at Arbour Hill this morning.
He and Irish President Mary McAleese attended a mass and wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate those who died for Irish independence in 1916.
Mr Ahern and Northern Ireland's (also) outgoing First Minister Ian Paisley, met on Tuesday to open a visitors' centre near Drogheda, that commemorates the 1690 Battle of the Boyne - in company with a large delegation of Orange Lodge members.
