First Minister to attend World Summit
First Minister David Trimble is to join world leaders at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa.
Mr Trimble is expected to attend the last three days of the event in Johannesburg to observe national and international environmental trends.
The aim of the 10-day Johannesburg summit is to reach agreement on reducing poverty in developing nations by fuelling environmentally friendly economic growth.
Local environmental campaigners, most notably the RSPB, say the Northern Ireland government's plans to safeguard wildlife and natural habitats are at a standstill.
Environmental agencies have criticised the first minister for not having a commissioned strategic document to tackle the issue with them when he attends the summit.
However, the Department of Environment will launch its biodiversity statement on September 7 at Castle Espie, Co Down.
The plan was put together following 86 recommendations from the biodiversity working group and will set out the department's plan until 2016.
