Biker Death Is Year's Fourth Tragedy
The death of an injured motorcyclist at the weekend brought to four the number of such road users killed this year on local roads, while at the same time, an inquest has been told of how excessive speed almost certainly killed two other bikers in 2006.
The latest victim was Terry Holmes, from Belfast, who was fatally injured in a crash on the Woodvale Road on Thursday last. The 18-year-old man later died in hospital.
Meanwhile, the name of a 20-year-old motorcyclist killed in a separate incident near Ballymoney, County Antrim on Friday has also been released.
Timothy Stewart's bike crashed at about 1pm on Friday on Burnquarter Road, near the junction with Bravallen Road.
It is believed no other vehicles were involved and the police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.
The deaths came within hours of an inquest being told that the deaths of two motorcyclists in County Tyrone two years ago were caused by "gross excessive speed".
The coroner ruled that Anthony Thompson, 38, and Colin Thornton, 43, died instantly when their motorcycles hit a lorry exiting from a side road just outside Newtownstewart. The inquest into the July 2006 deaths was held in Omagh on Friday.
Forensic officer Dr Emerson Callender said it was likely the men were travelling at "136mph or more".
He said that at that speed, they would have had between three and four seconds to react.
He said both men suffered massive head and neck injuries.
An eye-witness told the court that Mr Thornton and Mr Thompson appeared to be racing each other at somewhere in the region of 140mph.
He added that they did not appear to see the lorry and that "they stood no chance" at the speed they were travelling.
