Book of Condolence for Soham schoolgirls kept open
The Book of Condolence in memory of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, which was opened earlier this week by Derry City Council, is to be extended for one week.
The Mayor, Councillor Kathleen McCloskey, said such was the response from local people to the deaths of the two 10-year-old schoolgirls in Soham, England, last week that she decided to extend the opening hours at the Guildhall to allow members of the public to sign the Book.
“Hundreds of people have been queuing up to sign the Book of Condolence. The response from the local community has been phenomenal, everyone has been affected by this horrific murder and are wanting to offer their sympathies to the family and friends of these two children," she said.
“By opening the Book of Condolence for a further five days we are affording the local community an opportunity to offer their condolences to the families of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.
"Once completed, the Book of Condolence will be sent on behalf of the people of the city, to the local authority in Cambridgeshire to be passed on to the families of the two children.”
The Book of Condolence will be open at the Guildhall from 9am-5.30pm Monday to Thursday, and on Friday from 9am-5pm.

Education Minister, Paul Givan, has announced the opening of online applications for the Targeted Early Years Pathway Fund for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 academic years. The Pathway Fund, introduced in 2016, aims to provide early years education services for children aged 0-4 who may be at risk of falling behind in their education.
