Dog's Cruel Death Recalled
The death of a pet dog, cruelly killed by a woman's estranged husband was recalled in court earlier this week.
Alison McMonagle, 35, spoke about the ordeal after Wednesday's court case in which William David Streeter, 28, admitted ill-treating and killing his wife's pedigree golden retriever, called Mac.
After he hanged her dog, she was made to dig a grave for her beloved pet.
The grim story was revealed at North Antrim Magistrates Court, when Streeter, from Coleraine, also admitted making threats to kill Ms McMonagle in October 2006.
Streeter also admitted seven counts of cruelty to the dog over a period of a year including hitting it with a boulder and kicking it while wearing steel toe-capped boots.
He also admitted soaking the dog with a hose then leaving it outside and that he hanged the animal, causing its death. He is due for sentence in July.

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

Belfast Council Moves Dog Fouling Campaign North
Belfast City Council is moving its dog fouling campaign to the north of the city, in a bid to crack down on dog litter. The 'Your dog, your job' campaign was launched in west Belfast last month. The Council says it resulted in a reduction of dog litter in the area by just over a quarter (26%).

L'Derry Dogs Offered Free Microchipping
Dog owners in the city of L'Derry are being encouraged to take advantage of a free dog micro-chipping service being offered by the Dogs Trust. The Trust will be offering the service across a range of locations this week. The Mayor, Cllr Kevin Campbell said it was a great opportunity for dog owners to avail of the free service.

Sentences Imposed For Separate Belfast Dog Attacks
Two individuals were sentenced at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for separate dog attacks which injured either a person or animal. Mark McLaughlin of Prospect Park, Belfast, was convicted following an incident on March 29, 2024 in which his Collie-Husky cross attacked and injured a 3 year-old boy on the face and forehead at Prospect Park.
