Man shot in night of violence
A 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting in Newtownards last night.
He was attacked as he talked with friends in Stranmore Avenue just after 11pm. A Vauxhall Astra car with five men on board stopped beside the man and, after a short chase, the men caught him and shot the man in left calf and hit him with a hammer around the shoulders. The victim was then taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.
A short time after the assault a Vauxhall Astra was found burnt out in the Kerrs Road area of Newtownards.
Violence again also erupted in parts of Belfast last night as Protestant and Catholic mobs clashed in north and east of the city.
Security forces reported hearing shots being fired at around 9pm as crowds gathered in north Belfast at the Ardoyne Road junction with Alliance Avenue and at Glenbryn Park. Stones and other missiles were thrown but there were no reports of any injuries.
In the Cluan Place and Clandeboye Drive area of east Belfast, rival gang threw stones at each other and shortly after 9.30pm a small explosion was heard. A check of the area by police confirmed a firework was the most likely cause.
Elsewhere, at around 12.30am, two petrol bombs were thrown at a house on Queen Street in Portadown. The house suffered scorch and smoke damage, and an occupant is being treated for shock.
Meanwhile, in Antrim, three houses were hit by paint bombs in the Tower Way and Tarragon Park areas of the town at 11.30pm last night. There were no injuries and the police are treating the incident as sectarian.
