Two arrested over Caldwell murder

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of civilian worker David Caldwell at a TA base in Co Londonderry.

The arrests were made this morning after police carried out searches on 10 houses in Londonderry.

Mr Caldwell (51) died after he picked up a booby-trapped lunchbox at Caw TA base near Limavady, Co Londonderry, on August 1. He was a civilian engineer contracted to complete refurbishments at the base. The army have said that the base was not used for security operations, and usually only staged training days for teenage cadets.

The Real IRA, who had been active in the area recently, are thought to be responsible for planting the device. It was the Real IRA who were responsible for planting the bomb at the perimeter fence of Magilligan army base last year that also severely injured a civilian worker.

Today's arrests bring to seven the number of people who have been held in connection with the death of Mr Caldwell. Police released five people on August 3.
