Juvenile rape accused released on bail

The two teenagers charged in connection to the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Ballycastle have been released on bail from Ballymena Magistrate's Court.

A 14-year-old juvenile, who was charged with rape and burglary with intent to commit rape, did not reply when the charge was put to him. The 16-year-old co-defendant replied "not guilty" when the charge of burglary with intent to commit rape was put to him.

However, a detective constable told the court that he believed he could connect both juveniles with the charges.

The accused were released on strict conditions including appearing at a police station twice a week and staying away from Ballycastle.

They were also ordered not to consume alcohol and to remain under a nightly curfew in their homes.

The teenage girl was attacked in a holiday park in Ballycastle in the early hours of Monday morning at the Silver Cliffs Holiday Village in the town. She had been staying with family members at the holiday park.

The attackers broke into the caravan before forcing the girl to the floor and sexually assaulting her. However, the assailants fled after the girl's eight-year-old sister woke up during the attack.
