Motorist warned to plan journeys ahead of road closures
The Roads Service has warned motorists to plan their journeys ahead as a series of road closures take place along the M1 and the M2/M5 foreshore motorway next weekend.
Motorists are being advised to allow additional travelling time to complete journeys to ferries, airports and for essential business purposes during the closures.
The Roads Service said that the M1 closure is designed to facilitate the erection of temporary traffic management arrangements associated with the next phase of essential bridge strengthening works at the Kingsway and Black’s Road Bridges.
The M1 motorway will be closed between the Stockman’s Lane roundabout and the Saintfield Road roundabout at Lisburn, from 10pm on Saturday until 1pm on Sunday. It is not anticipated there will be any problems as traffic volumes are typically low at that time.
Diversion routes for the area affected will be via Saintfield Road (Lisburn), Queens Road, Dunmurry bypass, Black’s Road, Lisburn Road and Stockman’s Lane.
The closures on the M2/M5 foreshow motorway are to allow essential carriageway resurfacing to take place. It is the last of three successive weekend closures and temporary diversions have been successful in minimising disruption.
Closures will affect motorists travelling towards Belfast and will be between Fortwilliam and the M3 motorway at Nelson Street. The diversion route will be via Dargan Road, Duncrue Road, Duncrue Street, Whitla Street, Garmoyle Street, Dock Street and rejoin the system at Nelson Street. The M2 will be closed between 9pm on Friday and 6am on Monday.
The Belfast-bound carriageway of the M5 between Rushpark and Greencastle will also be closed to traffic during this period to facilitate the works. Diversion route signing will be in place to assist the travelling public.
A spokesman for the Roads Service said: “We apologise to motorists for any inconvenience, however this is the optimum time to carry out this essential work as it causes the least amount of disruption.”

Up to date travel information will also be given by local radio broadcasts.
