Bus attacks in Belfast and Londonderry

A 27-year-old man has been injured in an attack in Co Londonderry following an Apprentice Boys of Derry parade.

The man, named locally as Barry Quinn, was attacked in the Kilrea area by a number of men who got off a bus returning from the Derry parade on Saturday.

Earlier, the bus had been stoned by a number of youths as it left the parade.

Mr Quinn was attacked with sticks and stones and was taken to Antrim Area Hospital.

It is understood the incident happened at about 7.30pm on Saturday evening.

Several men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, two men have been arrested following an attempted robbery and hijacking of a bus in north Belfast.

The incident, which occurred on the Crumlin Road on the early hours of Monday morning, involved a sum of cash after two men, one armed with a handgun, got onto the bus close to Holy Cross church.

They forced the driver off and drove the vehicle towards the Upper Crumlin Road.

A police patrol responding to the incident observed the bus close to the Crumlin Road junction with Hesketh Road and two men were arrested.

During the incident one of the men placed the handgun against a police officer’s head in an attempt to evade arrest.

The police officer and the bus driver are thought to be suffering from shock.
