Belfast comes up 'smelling of roses'
A taste of the tropics has led to the Parks and Amenities Section of Belfast City Council coming up ‘smelling of roses’ at one of Britain’s most prestigious flower shows.
The Council’s entry at the annual Ayr Flower Show today scooped both the 'Best In Show' award and the prestigious 'Gold Medal'.
The entry, masterminded by area manager, Reg Maxwell, centred around rare tropical plants grown at Botanic Gardens.
The award-winning stand caught the eye of the judges with its display of plants from as far apart as Africa, Australia, Burma and South America, and including an Australian cherry tree, paw-paw and pineapple trees – all complete with fruit.
The Belfast City Council exhibit is one of the most popular at the annual Ayr show, and this year’s entry attracted considerable attention from both visitors to the show and the Scottish media.
