Stab Attacker Jailed
A domestic dispute that led to a vicious stabbing attack has now seen a 38-year-old Co Down man being jailed for five years. Terence Samways admitted the attack at their Ballyquinton Gardens home in Bangor on 20 February last year. He was earlier cleared of attempted murder. The couple had split up over Samways' drinking and he attacked his wife after she went back to their house to collect belongings from it. After the stabbing, a drunken Samways set fire to the house. Downpatrick Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, was told he had attacked his wife twice in the days before the stabbing.
Lisburn Landmark Reopens
One of Lisburn's best-known landmarks re-opened its doors to the public last week, following a £1 million facelift. The Bridge Community Centre, formerly the Temperance Institute, which has served the community for over a century, has undergone a complete refit designed to meet the standards required of a modern community facility.
Park Set To Bloom
One of Craigavon Borough Council's premier parks is applying for the prestigious Green Flag award and is only one of three in Ireland to do so. Lurgan Park has been invited to apply for the Green Flag which is the national standards for parks and green spaces. Run and judged by the UK-based Civic Trust, the park has to meet strict criteria, mostly based on the environmental aspects of the park, before acquiring the national accolade. The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country and is being extended now into Ireland for the first time.
Join Forces Says DUP Man
Huge electoral benefits would flow from a deal between the two main unionist parties if they worked together at future elections to maximise their strength, a senior DUP figure has claimed. Echoing a view previously held by his newly elected party leader, the Upper Bann MP David Simpson said greater cooperation between his party and the Ulster Unionists is essential if unionism wants to win back seats lost to nationalists and republicans as a result of fielding separate candidates.
Drugs Sought
Police are looking for potentially dangerous drugs and medical equipment stolen from a nurse's car in Portadown. Thieves smashed the rear window of the vehicle in the car park of Portadown Health Centre and stole a blue box containing needles, syringes, ampules of adrenaline and chlorphenamine at the weekend.
