Empey looks for regeneration through tourism
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has congratulated Lisburn City Council on their new, dedicated Tourist Information Centre.
At the opening the Tourist Information Centre, which is located in the heart of the new city, Sir Reg said that the tourism industry had the potential to act as a "catalyst to regenerate towns and cities across Northern Ireland".
The Minister said: “The new Tourist Information Centre is a significant contribution to tourism and an example of effective involvement in economic development and inner city regeneration.
“Tourism and tourists provide an economic base for supporting existing businesses and encouraging new enterprises. However, if tourism is to carry through this role we must collectively put an end to the negative aspects in our society which, for decades, have stopped us achieving our potential.
“There has been a huge investment in tourist facilities in the last decade. Tourist numbers have increased and now, through Tourism Ireland, Northern Ireland’s reach in the marketplace has greatly increased.”
Although Lisburn currently has a Tourist Information Centre (TIC) situated in the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, the new centre is being relocated to Lisburn Square to a new development on the site of the old Lisburn swimming baths.
Commending the local tourist attractions, including the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, Sir Reg highlighted the important role of Tourist Information Centres.
He said: “We work in a competitive environment. Visitors don’t have to come to Northern Ireland so when they do we must exceed their needs and expectations.
“By showcasing the full range of our tourism product, TICs play a vital role in helping visitors – both domestic and international - get the most out of their holiday. Lisburn and Northern Ireland in general will be well-served by this facility.”
The fitting out of the TIC was grant aided by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board from its Tourism Development Scheme.

Tourists touch down to International welcome
A new Tourist Information Centre (TIC) was opened at Belfast International Airport on Monday. Opened as a pilot project last June by the Belfast Visitor & Convention Bureau (BVCB), the TIC has now been expanded because of an increase in air access and the subsequent demand from those looking for visitor information.

Government sets aside £5.5m for Causeway Masterplan

Visitor Centre Planned For East Belfast
A new visitor centre has been announced for east Belfast. The centre will be located at the Holywood Arches on the Newtownards Road next to the new C.S. Lewis Civic Square that is due to be developed as part of the Connswater Community Greenway project.

McGrath named as new NITB chief
Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, has announced the name of the new chairman and four new members of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB). Tom McGrath, OBE, will replace Roy Bailie, OBE, as Chairman of the NITB with Mr Bailie retiring from the post as Chairman when his role expires on December 31, 2002.
