Software Jobs Boost - But Others Go At Calor

While there was both good news and bad news this week in Dublin with a computer software company announcing that it is to create more than 100 new jobs as part of a €29m investment in Dublin - it was also revealed that nearly 20 Irish jobs are to be lost elsewhere.

However, the jobs being shed in the Irish capital may have helped secure similar positions in Belfast.

While 18 jobs are to go in Dublin - following an announcement that Calor is closing its Dublin Port filling plant - the company said it took the decision after a strategic review of its operations in Ireland, which revealed significant increases in the cost of transporting cylinders.

It did confirm however that Calor's two other plants in Cork and in Belfast will remain open.

Dublin's better news came as the company, Business Objects revealed plans to open a research and development facility in the CityWest area of the Irish capital.

The new jobs will come on stream over a four-year period, with 50 of them expected to be filled before the end of the year.

Tanaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan officially announced the IDA-backed investment.
