Second Erne Rescue Drama

The man rescued after falling into Lough Erne earlier this week is recovering having been initially detained for observation in hospital.

This is the second such incident in weeks as a construction worker was forced to enter the chilly waters of Lough Erne to rescue a woman back in March.

In the latest water-based drama, police were alerted shortly before 2am on Monday after the man was reported falling from the Castle Bridge into the Lough.

The RNLI lifeboat was launched and the man was rescued from Castle Island and taken to Erne Hospital.

Sam McCreary, RNLI Fermanagh, confirmed that the lifeboat from the Upper Lough Erne RNLI base was launched and the man was taken to hospital.

"The man was quite hypothermic and was losing body heat really quickly. The crew were glad they got to him when they did," he said.

Just months ago, a construction worker, Oliver Ledwith, 45, from Enniskillen, was at the new site being developed at Erneside Shopping Centre shortly when the alarm was raised that a woman was in the water.

Speaking at the time Mr Ledwith said: "One of the engineers telephoned me and said 'bring a life vest and ring, there is someone in the water’.

"I thought it was a workman who had fallen into the water."

He pulled down some of the fencing and hoardings to get to the Wellington Road footbridge, which links the heart of Enniskillen town with the shopping centre.

"All I saw was the lassie’s jacket," he said.

"At that stage I wasn't sure whether it was a man or a woman. Then I was told it was a woman in the water."

"I stripped off all my clothes, leapt into the water and started an emergency rescue. I pulled her out and the ambulance paramedics started working on her.

"I was relieved once I saw her coughing up water," he told the Belfast News Letter.
