Sporadic violence in north Belfast

After several days of relative quiet, north Belfast witnessed a series of sporadic violent outbreaks, including reports that shots had been fired at one of the area's more volatile interface areas.

At around 11.30pm last night police reported hearing gunfire in the Glenbryn area as it patrolled the area. This was at a time when houses along the Oldpark Road, Alliance Avenue, Cliftondene Crescent and Cliftondene Park were being targeted by paint bombs and stone-throwers. Residents reported that several windows were broken during the attacks but no one was injured.

At around midnight, a pipe bomb was found in a garden at a house in Alliance Avenue. Army technical officers were immediately brought in and in a follow up search a second device was found in a nearby alleyway. Both pipe bombs were made safe.

Petrol bombs were also found in searches of the Glenbryn area.
