Council pay talks continue

Talks are continuing today over the pay dispute between council workers and local authority employers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Workers claim that their responsibilities have increased over time while their pay has remained unchanged during the same period - with some full-time workers earning less than £10,000 a year.

A new pay offer from employers to the unions was reported to have been put on the table at Friday's meeting, but details of the proposal have yet to emerge.

However, it is expected that if a settlement is not reached then a second national strike will go ahead on August 14. The first strike took place late last month when hundreds of thousands of workers took part in a staged walk out. A third strike is also set for September if an agreement is not reached.

Employers first offered 3%, but the unions want this figure doubled. Talks held last week ended with unions suggesting that employers had reneged on a deal to offer a £5 minimum wage.

Local authority employers say the unions' claim for a pay rise of 6% is equivalent to £80 a year on council tax bills and is therefore unaffordable without substantial job losses and cuts in services.

Around 277,000 council employees in Northern Ireland, England and Wales currently earn less than the £5-an-hour threshold.

Nine NI Firms Fined For Underpaying Workers
Nine Northern Irish businesses are amongst 191 UK businesses to be "named and shamed" for underpaying their employees. Following investigations by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, a total of £2.1 million was found to be owed to over 34,000 workers. The breaches took place between 2011 and 2018.

Hovis Workers Agree Increased Pay Offer
A majority of Hovis workers have accepted an increased pay offer and strike action has now ended. Unite the union welcomed the offer and said it was as "decisive victory for workforce achieved through collective organisation and industrial militancy".

MLA's call for new firefighters pay scheme
Two UUP MLA's have called on the Northern Ireland Executive to implement a new pay scheme for Ulster's firefighters. North Antrim UUP MLA the Rev Robert Coulter called for the introduction of a new pay formula in a motion to the Assembly on Monday. Mr Coulter said he hoped it would help achieve a real remedy to the question of firefighter’s pay.

Minister Responds To Lecturers' Pay Decision
Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey today expressed concern at the outright rejection of the pay offer made by Further Education (FE) Colleges to the FE lecturers' unions. The Minister said: “I share the lecturers' disappointment that normal collective bargaining has been frustrated, at least for the time being.
