Policing Board Tackles Omagh Fire Tragedy Aftermath
After this week's damning report by the DHSSPS on the tragic Omagh fire that killed an entire 'at risk' family last November, recommendations are to be made to the NI Policing Board after a review of the case in which a family of nine perished in a Omagh housefire.
The board is expected to question the PSNI tomorrow on its response to events leading up to the deaths. Arthur McElhill, Lorraine McGovern and their five children died in the blaze at Lammy Crescent in November 2007.
The review suggests reinforcement of PSNI child protection and domestic violence policies and that the police should ensure its sex offenders data base is checked when officers call to families with child protection issues.
PSNI, boards and trusts should also consider secondment of social services staff to eight PSNI public protection units, it said.
The NI Sex Offender Strategic Management Committee which oversees Multi-Agency Sex Offender Risk Assessment and Risk Management said: "There are two recommendations regarding inter-relations between MASRAM and child protection and the 'grave concern' threshold for referral of category one cases to multi-agency process.
"Both are being addressed through a new public protection arrangements to be implemented October 1."

PSNI trainees issued with personal protection weapons
New recruits to the PSNI are being issued with personal protection weapons following an assessment of the threat posed by paramilitary organisations. In one of his last acts as Acting Chief Constable, Colin Cramphorn advised the Policing Board Chairman Professor Desmond Rea that there was a significant threat from dissident republicans.

The Northern Ireland Policing Board remained locked in talks for much of Thursday as they discussed the future direction the Omagh bomb investigation should take. The Board, which is made up of individuals from both sides of the political divide met on Thursday, February 7, in an attempt to hammer out a compromise at Clarendon Dock.
