Around 2,000 Health Sector Jobs To Go By 2009
Nearly 2,000 jobs are being cut within the Irish health sector over the next year, according to a Health Service Executive document.
The internal document says more than 1,800 whole-time equivalent (WTE) posts are set to go by the end of 2009, including 45 from the ambulance service.
The details, revealed in the latest HSE circular on employment ceilings, make for grim reading, and come on the same day the CSO announced record levels of unemployment.
Sent out last month, the document also stated that 1,173 WTE posts are to be created in the primary, community and continuing care sectors in the domain of the HSE's PCCC Directorate.
The Executive's circular outlines the areas where jobs are to go and which hospitals networks will lose WTE posts.
A total of 1,818 WTE posts look set to be stripped from the sector.
However, the document does not elaborate on where new WTE jobs will be created.
Although 1,050 posts are expected to be created this year, thanks to new services for the elderly, palliative care, disability services, cancer care, and population health.
It is not clear whether these form part of the 1,173 due to be created in the primary, community and continuing care sector.
However, these 1,050 jobs have not yet been included in the HSE's overall employment ceiling, which currently stands at 111,505 and is due to fall to 110,600 by December 2009.
