Golf tournament a huge opportunity for North
Sports Minister, Michael McGimpsey, has said that major events such as the Senior British Open Golf Championship had the potential to bring huge rewards to the Province.
Mr McGimpsey speaking on the final day of the Open at the Royal County Down course in Newcastle, where he was presenting prizes, said that there were rewards to be had in terms of both visitor spend and in positive publicity for future investment.
He said: “We are very aware that in this Province we often make the news in the rest of the United Kingdom, and indeed, in much of the world, for the wrong reasons. We are conscious that this is a better place than is sometimes portrayed in the media.
“I am delighted therefore, that a world-wide audience of around 130 million has had the opportunity to see a Province which has the infrastructure, the capacity, the facilities and the energy, to host one of the most prestigious events in the golfing calendar.”
The Minister described the Senior British Open as the flagship of the European Seniors Tour and said that it was now one of the most celebrated competitions in the European golfing calendar.
