Belfast Taxi Fare Increases: Costs Still Lower Than UK
While public taxi fares in Belfast are due to rise next month, the costs are still lower than other comparable cities in the UK.
The Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) confirmed there would be an increase of between 13% and 19% depending on the time of travel. This increase will come into operation on 1 August 2008.
However, despite the increase, the fares in Belfast remain below those of comparable cities throughout the United Kingdom. There is also no evidence to suggest that capital of running costs are lower in Northern Ireland than elsewhere in Great Britain.
DVA Chief Executive, Brendan Magee said: "These increases will mean operators and drivers can recoup costs and ensure vehicles can be properly maintained and periodically upgraded.
"They will also help to encourage more drivers into the licensed Belfast public hire sector. However, they continue to represent good value for the customer in that Belfast fares will stay favourably with many comparators in GB."

SSE Airtricity Announces Over 20% Gas Price Increase
SSE Airtricity has announced a 21.8% rise in its natural gas prices from October – an increase that will see the average household bill rise by around £112. The company has said that the price increase is the result of the "sustained increases in external costs outside of its control". Some 178,000 households across NI are SSE Airtricity customers.

Enterprise Needs £500m Revamp
The Belfast to Dublin Enterprise is facing difficulties and is in need of a £500m revamp Northern Ireland Railways has revealed. Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy has admitted the service is facing problems. The time taken to travel between the two cities could be decreased and on average the train breaks down every eight days.

It has been revealed that the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland has written to Translink to urge a review of its charges. The consumer watchdog wants to bring down ticket prices and has called for a reduction in bus and train fares, after dramatic falls in the costs of fuel.
