BIA reveals record-breaking week

Belfast International Airport (BIA) has reported a record-breaking week after more than 90,000 passengers flew through the airport, making it the busiest week ever in the history of the airport.

Compared to the same week last year BIA’s overall passenger numbers increased by 1,000 and passenger traffic on scheduled domestic flights increased significantly, up 15%. Domestic routes experiencing the most notable increases were Luton, Liverpool and Stansted, with a 58% increase on this time last year.

The increase in BIA’s passenger traffic has been attributed to the impact of the low cost carriers. As further evidence of this, over 17,000 passengers travelled through the Airport last week on easyJet and Go services to Scotland.

Commenting on the figures, Uel Hoey, Director of Business Development and Marketing at BIA said: “This is a very good performance indicator for the Airport and we are committed to meeting the rising demand in Northern Ireland for air services. Despite September 11 there has been significant and sustained growth in demand for air travel in Northern Ireland - particularly within the thriving low cost market, where growth continues to exceed forecast.

"The low cost carriers have undoubtedly been the catalyst for growth and we look forward to further developments in this regard in coming months.”
