New firearms controls for NI published
The government has published proposals for new improved legislative controls for firearms in Northern Ireland.
Making the announcement, Security Minister Jane Kennedy said the proposed Draft Order was a result of a "fundamental review" of the current firearms controls.
“The purpose of the review was to take a fresh look at the controls, to see whether they remained relevant, effective and proportionate to society today," the Minister said.
“The principal objectives were to uphold and improve the rigorous safety standards and to sustain public confidence in the law, while having due regard for those who enjoy shooting as a legitimate leisure or sporting pursuit and the firearms trade.
"I believe that the proposals which I have published will meet those objectives," she added.
The proposals will be presented to the assembly and published for consultation by interested parties. The consultation period ends on December 31.
The new legislation is designed to replace the Firearms (NI) Order 1981.
