Royal Jubilee tops UK Caesarean births list
A survey carried out on behalf of the Times Newspaper has revealed that the Royal Jubilee maternity unit in Belfast carries out the highest rate of Caesarean births in the UK.
The report, by a medical research organisation called Dr Foster, said that the unit was top of the list after having found that almost a third of the babies were delivered by Caesarean section.
The hospital said the reason behind the statistic was that as it is a specialist regional maternity unit, they deal with many more women with complications than other maternity units.
The survey also found the Mid-Ulster Hospital in Magherafelt, which is due to close shortly, has the lowest rate of Caesareans in the province at 13%.
Northern Ireland has long had one of the highest rates for Caesarean sections in the UK.
