Education Minister makes working visit to America
Education Minister, Martin McGuinness, has left Northern Ireland for a four-day study visit to the United States, where he will meet with leading American educationalists to share ideas.
Speaking before his departure, Mr McGuinness said the purpose of his visit was to share best practice and to ensure that local systems benefit from shared experience.
He added: “This visit will broaden our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our education system here and of the approaches taken in different countries to the issues that we all face.
“Worldwide, our greatest asset is our young people and our education systems must not fail them. I want every child, no matter what type of background they come from, to have access to the best education possible and I am committed to putting a system in place here that will equip our young people for the challenges of the 21st century.”
During the visit the Minister will meet with US Deputy Secretary of Education, William Hansen, as well as other senior representatives from the US education system. Mr McGuinness will discuss a number of areas including drug awareness, early childhood education and pay particular attention to the area of special educational needs when he meets the US Assistant Secretary for Special Education, Mr Bob Pasternack.
The Minister will be accompanied by officials from his Department, including the Permanent Secretary, Gerry McGinn.
