Climate Change Levy will cost businesses says FSB
A Federation of Small Business report, published on Monday July 15, has said that the Climate Change Levy represents a significant increase to business costs despite Government claims that it is "fiscally neutral".
The report, "Climate Change Levy - another cost for businesses," shows that 88% of the small firms that pay the Climate Change Levy are worse off as a result. This is despite claims that any revenue raised is recycled through discounts via their Employers' National Insurance Contributions.
John Holbrow, FSB Environmental Affairs Chairman said: "Firms with large workforces and low energy use, such as local authorities and big businesses, are the winners because they have more staff eligible for the discount. The Climate Change Levy discriminates against smaller firms and is particularly hitting manufacturers and hoteliers who are already struggling."
FSB research has also revealed that 45% of businesses do not know whether they pay the Climate Change Levy and few people are aware of its environmental objectives.
Mr Holbrow concluded by saying that Climate Change Levy was an excise duty presented as a environmental initiative and that the FSB was lobbying for its abolition.

Climate Levy 'Reduction' Welcomed
NI businesses will soon face a £1.5m bill because of a climate change levy, even though they will be paying only a proportion of the full amount. CBI Northern Ireland Regional Director Nigel Smyth said: "What is going to happen now is that costs will go up by £1-1.5 million.
