FSB hit out at Consignia mail charge plans

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in Northern Ireland has hit out at plans by Consignia to charge for early morning postal services.

According to Consignia proposals revealed yesterday, businesses and individuals receiving less than 20 letters per day can expect delivery in the afternoon. For those who wish to receive letters before 9am, there will be £14 weekly charge for the early morning service.

The charges are part of a series of changes taking place in 14 pilot areas – which includes Ballymena – from next Monday. It has already been announced that the second post will be abolished in favour of a single delivery every day.

Under the proposals, businesses receiving more than the 20 letters a day quota will get their post delivered between 7am and 9am.

The changes are part of a three-year restructuring plan designed to reduce Consignia's operating costs by up to £1 billion. This latest shake-up of delivery services is expected to save the company around £350 million.
