Spanish Tragedy Underlines Disabled Pensioner Death
As news emerged yesterday of the death of a 78-year-old Armagh woman - struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing while on holiday in Las Americas, Tenerife - accident investigators have begun examining the wreckage of a plane that was bound for the holiday islands when it crashed at Madrid's Barajas airport, leaving 153 passengers dead.
Spanair flight JK 5022, was bound for Las Palmas - also in the Canary Islands - when it took off on Wednesday lunchtime with 172 people on board
Three days of official mourning have been declared in Madrid, as relatives arrive at a makeshift mortuary in the capital to identify bodies.
Nineteen people survived the crash - though some remain in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, relatives locally are mourning the death of the Tenerife road accident victim Molly Grimley.
She was 78 and from Portadown Road in Armagh City.
Spanish newspaper reports indicate that the holidaymaker, who used a wheelchair, was hit by a car driven by a person who was over the legal alcohol limit and is known to police.
They said the pensioner and her two daughters had just left a restaurant when the accident took place.
