Three remanded in custody over Drumcree riot charges

Three men have been remanded in custody after appearing in court on charges of riotous behaviour after yesterday’s violent confrontation at Drumcree.

David Cully, 43, from Gosford Gardens, Markethill; Alan Cheney, 17, of Rogan Manor, Glengormley and Mark Wilson, 37, of The Beeches, Maghera were all charged with riotous assembly and remanded in custody until July 25 at Craigavon Magistrate’s court today.

Mr Cully, who was injured by a police baton round, appeared with his arm bandaged and in a sling.

Twenty-four police officers were injured during the riots which quickly erupted after Orangemen were prevented from walking down the Nationalist Garvaghy Road.

The trouble began after a letter of protest was handed in to a senior police officer at the security barriers.

A short time later a small crowd of supporters then forced open the gates which were in place to stop the march going down the road.

They began throwing stones and other missiles at the police.

During the trouble, which lasted less than an hour, police and soldiers fired three plastic bullets injuring at least two civilians.

The Orange Order has strongly criticised the violence, saying that any Orangeman who was found to have been involved would face disciplinary action.

David Burrows, deputy district master of the Portadown Orange Lodge, described the trouble as “unfortunate”.

He said: “We have called for peaceful protest all along and we will continue to do so.

“We have marshals, but there is only so much marshals can do - people don’t want to listen to reasonable people, that is the difficulty we have.”
