Carbon Trust appoints new NI manager

The Carbon Trust, the Government-backed company leading on low carbon technology and innovation in the UK, has appointed Geoff Smyth as manager for its Northern Ireland office.

The Carbon Trust’s role is to work with businesses and the public sector in the UK and one of Mr Smyth's first responsibilities will be the promotion of the Carbon Trust’s new investment programme – the Foundation Programme – which is aimed at encouraging the development of new and emerging low carbon technologies throughout the UK.

The Foundation Programme is the first part of a larger and wide-ranging initiative – the Low Carbon Innovation Programme (LCIP) – which will make up to £75 million available over a three-year period to a range of partners including researchers, the public sector, investors and entrepreneurs across the UK.

Mr Smyth, who will be based at the Invest Northern Ireland offices in Lisburn, said: “I am delighted to take up my new post with the Carbon Trust and am looking forward to working to drive forward the Carbon Trust’s work in Northern Ireland.

“Northern Ireland has an established base of companies which are already leading players in the international sustainable energy sector.

"I believe that the Carbon Trust is uniquely positioned to partner and assist Northern Ireland companies engaged in developing energy efficiency technologies as well as new approaches to harnessing renewable and other, alternative energy sources. The Carbon Trust has been given an exciting mandate to help tackle the issue of climate change.

“I am confident that through close co-operation with Invest Northern Ireland we can, together, provide the support which Northern Ireland businesses need to play their part in meeting this challenge.”

The Foundation Programme is an approach which allows the Carbon Trust to invest by way of loan equity as well as providing grant funding as appropriate whilst identifying optimum CO2 emissions reductions in any investment opportunity.

A formal LCIP launch event for Northern Ireland is set to take place on August 7 at Belfast's Waterfront Hall.
