Two Critical After Separate Assaults
Police are anxious to interview three mysterious hospital 'visitors' after a brutal attack in Coleraine left a 29-year-old man in critical condition and a woman is in custody after a separate serious attack in Belfast.
The Co Londonderry victim was set upon in an early Sunday morning assault in Coleraine which police said happened at Bannfield Road at about 2.30am.
Reports said that the as yet unnamed man had just been refused entry to a local nightclub and was attacked shortly after being turned away.
Police were called to the scene when the assault was underway, but only the badly injured victim was found when they arrived.
Bannfield Road was closed and diversions put in place yesterday as motorists were asked to avoid the area.
Police have since said that three men visited Coleraine hospital at about 3am to check on the man's condition and have appealed for these people to come forward as they may be able to help with the investigation.
The man was later transferred to the Royal Hospital in Belfast where he was today listed as critical.
UUP East Londonderry Assembly Member David McClarty has condemned the assault: "This attack is sickening and distressing. The vicious nature of this incident is abhorred by every right thinking person.
"My thoughts are with the victim and his family at this time.
"I would appeal to anyone who may have even the smallest piece of information which could help police in their investigation to come forward immediately," he said.
Meanwhile, a 23-year-old woman is being treated in hospital after being seriously assaulted in west Belfast.
The incident, which was reported to police at about 1.30am this morning (Monday), happened in a lay-by close to playing fields on the Andersonstown Road.
The victim is described as being in a critical, but stable condition.
A 25-year-old woman has since been arrested.
