Boost to euro from business travellers

The euro is enjoying major support from UK-based business travellers, according to a survey conducted by leading travel management company, Carlson Wagonlit Travel.

The results indicated that 74 per cent of business travellers supported the euro, with only 13 per cent against and a further 12 per cent with no particular view or opinion.

Over half the respondents had travelled to Europe in the early part of 2002 - just after the official introduction of the currency.

In terms of benefits identified, 73 per cent of business travellers believed that not needing to change currencies all the time was a major plus. The elimination of exchange rate exposure was identified as a bonus by 67 per cent.

A significant 88 per cent of business travellers believe that the euro simplifies travel overall in Europe and at least ten per cent of travellers thought that the euro would lead them to travel more for business - due to “trade and investment flows boosted by the single currency”.

Commenting on the results, Jim Tweedie, Vice President North Europe for Carlson Wagonlit Travel, said: “The euro has undoubtedly brought advantages to business travellers and the results of the survey are not entirely surprising. Although the UK has chosen not to enter the euro zone, many UK companies are doing business with countries across the region and clearly need to travel there.

The survey was conducted across the global company’s UK client base - with travel spend per company ranging from tens of thousands of pounds a year to tens of millions of pounds.
