Defeat Twice

The Irish Football Association's President has said he believes Northern Ireland fans were victims of an unprovoked attack in Slovakia. As well as being beaten on the pitch, fans were earlier also beaten unconscious. It is understood two fans were knocked out by a group of 12 men, thought to be 'bouncers' from a private security firm anxious to earn their pay. The supporters were beaten with batons, knuckle-dusters and baseball bats in the Dubliner bar in Bratislava. They were part of a contingent in the city for the Northern Ireland v Slovakia match which ended in a 2 - 1 defeat on Saturday. IFA president Raymond Kennedy said: "I am absolutely appalled that our fans, with the record (of good behaviour) that they have, cannot come away here and get into a pub and enjoy themselves."

Quinn Accused Freed

The man arrested in the Dundalk area on 4 September over the murder of south Armagh man Paul Quinn has been released without charge. The 50-year-old was questioned over the killing of Mr Quinn who was beaten to death at farm buildings near Castleblayney in Co Monaghan last October. Eleven people have been held by Gardaí and the PSNI investigating his death, but no one has been charged. His family said the IRA killed the 21-year-old after he had defied an order to leave the country. Sinn Fein denies any republican involvement.
