NI Manager Visit Boosts Womens' Game

Nigel Worthington, the Northern Ireland International Manager, (pictured here by Spike Hill, Irish FA) took time out to visit the Girls Model in North Belfast, where, during a one hour 'Question and Answer' session, the girls from the 6th form, PE classes and girls football team asked Nigel many wide and varied questions relating to Women's football, his own footballing career and his current role as Manager of the International team. Nigel said: "School visits are an important part of my job with the Association. Women's football is equally as important and a huge growth area for the Irish FA. I would urge more school girls to take up football," he said.

ATM Take-Away

Four men with a large quarry-style digger and a trailer have stolen a complete ATM machine from a business in Carrickmore in Co Tyrone. The digger was used to demolish the front wall of the premises on Main Street at approximately 3.30am on Tuesday. The ATM was then taken away in a galvanised high-sided trailer towed by a light coloured estate car. It is not known how much cash was in the Automated Teller Machine (ATM), but when filled, each one contains £140,000, protected by a series of anti-theft devices.

XL Passengers Home

Local people from Northern Ireland caught abroad by the collapse of tour operator XL have been arriving home on flights arranged by the aviation authorities. About 600 holidaymakers were abroad on flights from Belfast International Airport when the firm collapsed. The firm flew from Belfast to Corfu, Crete and Rhodes.

Decentralise Tax: SF

Just as moves accelerate to devolve remaining powers from London to Belfast, Sinn Féin Economy spokesperson and MLA for South Antrim, Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the findings of a new report commissioned by the London-based Tax Payers Association that has called for the decentralisation of tax raising powers from the British Exchequer. Speaking today Mr McLaughlin said: "On the day of a visit to the North of Ireland by the British Prime Minister, this report, written by a former treasury economist, is something that Gordon Brown needs to take on board. The report is critical of the flawed Barnett formula and states that tax raising powers need to be decentralised. Sinn Féin have consistently argued that the Barnett formula is unfair and that it fails to recognise the levels of need that exists here. This coupled with the recent hikes in NIE and Phoenix gas charges have highlighted once again the lack of fiscal powers that the Executive have. If we in the north were to have tax raising powers and more fiscal control we would be in a much stronger position to deal with the current economic crisis.
