Woman, 89, Left Shaken After Derry Attack
An elderly Londonderry woman has been left shaken after thugs demanded £200 for unwanted gardening work, then assaulted her son.
The 89-year-old, who does not wish to be identified, described how three seemingly "very nice" men carried out work in her garden without permission, last Friday, then asked for almost £200 payment.
"They were very nice at the start but when I told one not to go any further he got angry with me," she said.
The woman explained to the men she had no money but they returned on Monday asking for the cash.
She again refused to pay the men, and when her son intervened he was punched.
The woman was left traumatised, and expressed fears that the situation could have escalated into further violence.
Her son suffered a black eye in the fracas but was not seriously injured.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.

Pensioner Burgled In East Belfast
Police are appealing for information after a pensioner was burgled in east Belfast. The 90-year-old woman was left shaken after three men broke into her property in Abbey Park at around 8pm on Thursday. They made off with a sum of money and the woman's handbag. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Woman Found Unconscious On Co Down Road
A woman has been found unconscious on a road in County Down. The woman, aged in her 50s, was discovered on the Sheepland Road at around 4.30am on Sunday. She was taken to hospital where she is believed to be in a serious condition.
