MP Welcome 1,000 Much-Needed NI Construction Jobs
A massive mixed-use development on the Derry Road in Omagh - that will create around 1,000 much-needed construction jobs in Northern Ireland - has been welcomed by MP Pat Doherty.
Mr Doherty said proposals for the ambitious development will be a welcome boost for the local construction industry, which is currently experiencing an economic downturn.
The development, which includes high grade office space, a business media centre, a hotel, as well as retail, health and leisure facilities has been on public display in the Strule Arts centre for a number of weeks.
According to the Sinn Fein MP: "I held a meeting last Friday with GML Estates who are the developers of the Derry Road site.
"During our exchange, they informed me that the Opportunity Omagh proposal will create at least 1,000 construction jobs for a period of 3 to 4 years while the site is being developed.
"This work can commence immediately, following approval of the scheme by the Planning Service."
Mr Doherty continued: "The developers assured me that work on the site will go out locally for tender and that all construction materials, such as steel will be procured from local providers.
"Coupled with the anticipated 1,000 jobs that will be created when the site is complete, the impact on the local economy will incalculable."
He said: "The Derry Road proposals also compliment ongoing work on the Omagh 2025 Visioning framework and the DSD town centre masterplan, which are currently on display for public consultation in the Public Service centre.
"As such, I have also taken the initiative of inviting Alison McCullagh, Head of Development of Omagh District Council to elaborate on the Omagh 2025 Visioning Framework and Town centre masterplan."
Mr Doherty added: "As MP for this area, I welcome this investment as a huge vote of confidence in our community, and I especially welcome its potential to bring jobs to those in the construction sector which currently struggling."
