Few Good Samaritans Around, Claims Highjacked Driver

Good Samaritans are getting thin on the ground, a Co Tyrone woman has told a local radio station.

According to a traumatised woman there are few people around now who are willing to step into a situation to help - even when a lone woman is being attacked.

Speaking today on BBC Radio Ulster, driver, Debbie O'Brien, 26, said she was sitting in traffic in south Belfast when a man got out of the car in front and opened her door.

He then struggled with the victim before dragging her from the vehicle and driving off in it.

Despite the large number of cars around her in the traffic, Ms O'Brien said only one couple stopped to help.

She said she is shocked that other motorists who witnessed the incident did not stop to help her, even though it was on the busy Lisburn Road, and took place in the early evening - at 8pm.

Police investigating the incident have appealed for any witnesses to contact them and have said that while Debbie was unhurt, she was badly shaken and that her silver Volkswagen Golf is still missing.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the taxi driver who was brutally beaten on a night out in Belfast last month has had the top of his skull removed to reduce brain swelling and still cannot speak.

Bangor man Jeremy Mooney, 41, was woken from a medically-induced coma last week - but for the first few days could not remember who his family were.

The father-of-two suffered severe head injuries when he was attacked by a gang in front of his girlfriend at Sussex Place in the Markets area of Belfast on Friday, September 19.

Mr Mooney, who is also a grandfather, was attacked on his way to a concert when a mob shouted abuse at him and girlfriend Dawn McClure who was herself knocked out by the gang before they attacked her boyfriend.
