Waterford Crystal To Cut 280 Staff

Bosses at the famous Waterford Crystal plant have announced they are to cut 280 workers.

Workers are due to meet with management on Thursday to discuss the plans.

Staff are furious with the decision, and according to reports, have criticised the proposal believing it will turn the factory, which already takes in 300,000 visitors a year, into a "crystal theme park".

Almost 500 posts were axed last November – although 200 of those redundancies have not been taken up - and workers' union Unite are expected to lead talks with staff and management pressing for company bosses to save manufacturing of the iconic brand in Waterford.

However, employers are unlikely to secure a final deal on cost-saving and more meetings will be planned for the coming weeks.

But even if a deal is struck, only 125 staff will stay on in Kilbarry, with only 70 in manufacturing and the rest dealing with administration and the strong tourism business.

The majority of production is now taking place in other factories in eastern Europe.

The company has been troubled by falling sales, rising costs and the weak US dollar, which has put pressure on the company's exports.
