Queen’s University staff discuss package
Senior academic staff at Queen's University in Belfast met today to discuss a package of measures aimed relocating resources, cutting back staff and closing one department.
The package is part of the university’s phase II of a major restructuring plan Robert Baxter Press Relations Officer for the university explained.
Phase I initiated in 1998 brought in over 100 new academics and saw the university jump the league table and enter the top 20 universities in the UK for the first time Mr Baxter said.
He added said this was not a cost cutting exercise and that they intended to recruit new staff into popular subjects such as computers, medicine, drama and film studies.
The university however said it was unwilling to disclose the exact measures but that it would wait until Queen’s ruling body, the Senate, met next Tuesday to make a full announcement.
It has been reported that the Classics department which teaches Latin and Greek will close. Allegedly the department’s intake numbers has been very low and the university has decided to relocate resources into other faculties.
The package is also thought to contain proposals recommending members of staff in other faculties to take early retirement or voluntary redundancy.

University Workers Reject 'Insulting' Pay Deal
Today outside Queen's University, workers are demonstrating against a low pay offer. The current offer of a one per cent increase is 'an insult' to the hard working staff, their union Unite said, arguing that it did not match the 3.1% retail prices index and they would find it harder to buy essential goods as inflation spikes.

Graduate Entry Medical Students To Benefit From Tuition Fee Loans
Economy Minister Conor Murphy has announced that from the 2025/26 academic year, students enrolled in the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University's Derry-Londonderry campus will be eligible for tuition fee loans. Previously, graduate entry medical students were unable to access government loans to cover tuition fees.
