Day 9: Movilla Strike To Continue

Teachers at Movilla High School, in Newtownards, have decided to remain on the picket line, after further talks aimed at ending their strike failed.

Twenty-five NASUWT union members rejected a deal by the South Eastern Education and Library Board, which was hoped would get the teachers back into the classroom, following nine days of industrial action.

The dispute was sparked by an alleged assault on a member of staff.

Union staff refused to teach the pupil at the centre of the alleged incident, and subsequently had their pay docked.

Teachers have withdrawn one of three proposals it had laid out for a resolution to the walkout.

Union members no longer want to see the boy taught in specialist isolation at the school.

Further talks at the Labour Relations Agency are yet to be announced.

Ten ATL union members at the Co Down school have yet to formally support the strike, but are said to have been consulted on the Education Board's offer.

More discussions are to take place on the issue, according to a spokesman, who described the offer as "a step forward".
