Teachers praised at annual BT awards
The Education Minister Martin McGuinness paid tribute to the work of local teachers and classroom assistants across the province at a special ‘Oscar’ style ceremony for teachers held in Belfast yesterday.
Acknowledging the influence of “external pressures” unique to Northern Ireland’s society Mr McGuinness said the Annual National Teaching Awards recognised the work and dedication of the north’s “most inspiring and unforgettable teachers and teaching assistants”.
In his keynote address at the ceremony in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall, Mr McGuinness said: “Our heartfelt thanks must go to the entire teaching profession for their work not only in educating our young people, but in developing confident young adults who will contribute greatly to a prosperous, productive, dynamic and tolerant society.
“Not only do our teachers need to have a detailed knowledge of the curriculum but they also need to have leadership skills, an infectious enthusiasm for learning and the ability to help our children be the best that they can be.”
Special needs teacher Elizabeth Quinn from Holy Cross Girls Primary School in north Belfast received the top accolade of BT Teacher Of The Year in a primary school, while Anne Tanney, Holy Cross Principal was also specially commended in the school leadership category.
Other winners included Mary Boyle, Thornhill College, Derry who picked up the BT award for Teacher Of The Year in a post-primary school.
The award for excellence in Special Needs Training was awarded to Norman Johnston, of Fleming Fulton Special School, Belfast and Jackie Neill, Dunclug College, Ballymena.
While Slemish College in Ballymena picked up two awards for the Guardian award for Outstanding New Teacher and the Leadership Trust Award for School Leadership in post-primary.
The winners of the BT sponsored awards received £3,000 for their school and an opportunity to attend an ‘e-learning’ visit to the US next year.
The winners will also go through to the UK finals later this year.
