Viridian champion all-island energy market
Economies of scale and new generation will bring greater choice, and competitive prices for customers in an all-Ireland energy market, according to Dr Patrick Haren, Chief Executive of Viridian Group.
Dr Haren was addressing the Energy Ireland conference at the Burlington Hotel, Dublin on the topic of “Creating Conditions for an All-island Energy Market”.
The Chief Executive of Viridian Group focused on the necessity to create the right conditions for competitive markets in electricity generation to allow the development of real electricity supply competition throughout the island of Ireland in the coming years.
Dr Haren said: “Instinct tells us that two small markets on one small landmass just cannot be efficient. Instinctively we know that an all Ireland energy market can only be for the good, providing efficiency, economies of scale, and greater choice for customers.
“An all island market, if efficiently implemented will bring competitive prices, better quality service for customers, and deliver an environment where industry can make the returns that encourage investment and long term commitment.
“The interests of efficient generators and suppliers wishing to trade in the market are complementary to the interests of customers.”
Highlighting the need for new and more efficient generation capacity Dr Haren said that generation in the Republic of Ireland was already running close to capacity and demand is ultimately in danger of out-stripping supply.
Dr Haren called for action from policy makers to develop conditions where an effective all-island market can function effectively.
